The Quick Swig: As usual, Southern Star makes a solid beer for a particular style. A go-to saison/farmhouse ale for someone looking for an easy drinker. If I can find it, I’ll buy it again.
If you read about my first trip to Big Hops Growlers on Huebener in San Antonio, then you know I recently got a fill of Southern Star’s Walloon. For me, they’re a can’t miss brewery, so I was excited to get something new from them. Let’s see how this matches up to their other offerings.
The Label
Since I got this off tap, I didn’t get to see the label. However, this time I was smart enough to Google it so I could discuss in the review. And once again, no one designs a label like Southern Star. This one’s far out. A dude with a hipster stache and two sets of eyes apparently shooting laser beams from them. Oh and there are circus tents in the background. Crazy stuff but looks awesome.
The pour is golden and a bit hazy. There’s a bit of head at first, but that dissipated pretty quickly. There’s almost no lacing on the glass.
The Smell
It’s a mildly sour smelling beer, which is what you’d expect from the style. Bready malts, clove, and maybe a hint of banana peel.
The Taste
I’d describe this as a mild saison. You get some sweetness throughout and a dry finish. Some citrus notes towards the end. The flavors don’t linger (I wish they would). However, it is dry and refreshing.
The Overall
Is it groundbreaking? Nope. But it’s a good beer. Give it a shot. A great way to end the saison hot weather season. Good job, Southern Star!
